Colorectal Cancer Awareness
Understanding Prevention, Screening, and Community Health
A Commitment to Health Education
Colorectal cancer, often called colon cancer, is one of the most common cancers in the United States. Despite its seriousness, it is also one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when discovered early.
The Zion Baptist Church Health Ministry (ZBCHM) works to promote health awareness and wellness within our congregation and throughout the Washington, DC community. Through partnerships with healthcare organizations and research institutions, Zion helps connect community members with trusted health information and educational resources.
Understanding Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer begins in the colon or rectum, both of which are part of the large intestine. The disease often develops slowly over time and typically begins as small growths known as polyps.
Many polyps are harmless at first, but some can eventually develop into cancer if they are not found and removed. Because colorectal cancer may develop without noticeable symptoms in its early stages, regular screening is essential.
- Colorectal cancer may develop without symptoms in early stages.
- Polyps can often be removed before they become cancerous.
- Early detection greatly improves treatment outcomes.
Why Screening Matters
Health experts recommend that most adults begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45. Screening tests help doctors detect polyps before they become cancerous or identify cancer early when treatment is most effective.
Common screening methods include colonoscopy, stool based tests, and other examinations recommended by healthcare professionals. Speaking with a healthcare provider can help determine which screening option is most appropriate.
Community Partnerships for Health
Through collaborations with organizations such as the Georgetown–Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science (GHUCCTS), Zion Baptist Church Health Ministry supports community efforts that increase education and awareness about colorectal cancer.
These partnerships help ensure that individuals and families have access to reliable health information that encourages prevention, screening, and healthier communities.
